But it’s in part that Mikasa’s been put in a terrible situation with no good choices. I mean, of course those tears are also for Armin and the state he’s in. Have you ever seen Mikasa cry when she was drawing her blades to defend her loved ones before? Because I sure haven’t. And here, faced with the situation, Mikasa is a wreck. She never saw it coming that one day her loyalty to Eren and Armin would conflict with her new loyalty to the SC at large. And once Mikasa gives her loyalty, it’s a pretty damn solid thing. She has come to appreciate Levi, in particular. She has come to respect and value her comrades in the SC. HOWEVER, things have changed in the meanwhile. To wit:Īnd the Mikasa of today still has those impulses, because they are integral to who she is. Loved ones is to take action: defend them, strike back, get angry andĪnd in the past, she did this without reference to anything and anyone else. Mikasa’s general strategy for dealing with whatever is threatening her

I’ve written volumes about Mikasa’s character development up to this point, and the crux of my arguments was that, at the start of the manga, Mikasa tended to act unilaterally and solve most of her problems through violence, and her character arc has been in large part about learning to trust other people and work in a team.Īnd this moment showcases perfectly how far she’s come.īecause this is the central thing to Mikasa’s character, right? As said on a previous occasion, I actually LOVED that moment when Mikasa drew her blades on Levi.Īnd the reason why I loved it was because it was so hard for her to do it.

So here’s a potentially unpopular opinion: I’ve seen quite a lot of discussion about this lately, and kinda felt like putting in my two cents.
